Free early learning for two year olds
Did you know that your two-year-old child could have up to 15 hours of free childcare each week?
Quality early learning within settings can help your child:
- make new friends
- experience new activities
- get ready for school
It can also help you:
- have more time
- take up a college course
- go back to work
- meet other parents
- get ideas of how to help your child play and learn
Are you eligible?
Is your household income less than £16,190 and are you in receipt of Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit?
Or you must get at least one of these benefits:
- Income Support (IS)
- Income-based Job Seekers’ Allowance (JSA)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
- Help from the National Asylum Support Service (NASS) – Section 6 only of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Pension Credit Child Tax Credit and/or Working Tax Credits where your household income is £16,190 or less
Your two-year-old is looked after by the Derby City Local Authority or has a Child Protection Plan. Children with adoption orders, residence orders or special guardianship orders are also eligible.
Your child has a disability and receives Personal Independence Payments (PIPs) / Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
If you are entitled, your child can start the term after they turn two and finishes at the end of the term in which your child turns three. You can then claim the three and four-year-old 15 hours of free early education.

How to Register
The online checking system for the extended free childcare offer for 3 and 4-year-olds is now available to parents.
Currently, all 3 and 4-year-olds are entitled to 570 hours of free childcare a year as a universal offer. In September 2017 this will be increased for eligible working families up to 1140 hours, known as The Extended Free Childcare Offer.
Parents can now register their details using the following https://childcare-support.tax.service.gov.uk/ where you can find out if you can access this exciting offer. This offer will provide parents huge savings on their childcare costs, and also benefit children’s early years’ education. If parents do not have internet access they can make a telephone application by calling HMRC on 0300 123 4097.
